After days of voting, tallying, and anticipation, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officially announced the results at the national Results Operations Centre on Sunday, 03 June 2024.
For the first time, voters had the opportunity to cast three separate ballots, reflecting their choices at the national, regional, and provincial levels.
A noteworthy 58.61% voter turnout was achieved, with a staggering 16 million South Africans casting their votes.
In the National Assembly, there’s been a reshuffle in seat distribution. The African National Congress (ANC) has seen a notable decline, now holding 159 seats compared to their previous 230. Conversely, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has experienced a slight increase from 84 to 87 seats. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) witnessed a decrease from 44 to 39 seats. Meanwhile, the new party uMkhonto weSizwe Party, have officially secured 58 seats.
According to the latest Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) results, the ANC garnered a total of 40.18% support, amassing 6 459 683 votes, while the DA follows with 21.81%, translating to 3 505 735 votes. The MK Party bagged 14.58% support, with a total of 2 344 309 votes.
The distribution of seats in the 400-member National Assembly reflects the following results:
– African National Congress (ANC) – 159 seats.
– Democratic Alliance (DA) – 87 seats.
– uMkhonto weSizwe party (MK party) – 58 seats.
– Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – 39 seats.
– Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) – 17 seats.
– Patriotic Alliance (PA) – 9 seats.
– Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) – 6 seats.
– ActionSA – 6 seats.
– African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) – 3 seats.
– United Democratic Movement (UDM) – 3 seats.
– African Transformation Movement (ATM) – 2 seats.
– Al Jama-ah – 2 seats.
– Build One South Africa (BOSA) – 2 seats.
– National Coloured Congress (NCC) – 2 seats.
– Rise Mzansi – 2 seats
– GOOD Party – 1 seat
– Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) – 1 seat
– United Africans Transformation (UTM) – 1 seat
Regional breakdowns of National Assembly winners are as follows:
– Eastern Cape – ANC with 62.42% of the vote, 16 seats.
– Free State – ANC with 52.56% of the vote, 6 seats.
– Gauteng – ANC with 34.62% of the vote, 17 seats.
– KwaZulu-Natal – MK Party with 44.91% of the vote, 19 seats.
– Mpumalanga – ANC with 51.31% of the vote, 8 seats.
– Northern Cape – ANC with 49.47% of the vote, 3 seats.
– Limpopo – ANC with 73.38% of the vote, 16 seats.
– North West – ANC with 58.29% of the vote, 8 seats.
– Western Cape – DA with 53.37% of the vote, 14 seats.
The provincial legislature winners are as follows:
– Eastern Cape – ANC with 45 seats.
– Free State – ANC with 16 seats.
– Gauteng – ANC with 28 seats.
– KwaZulu-Natal – MK Party with 37 seats.
– Mpumalanga – ANC with 27 seats.
– Northern Cape – ANC with 15 seats.
– Limpopo – ANC with 48 seats.
– North West – ANC with 23 seats.
– Western Cape – DA with 24 seats.
IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya, during the results announcement program, declared the 2024 National and Provincial Elections results as free and fair, citing meticulous planning and adherence to electoral regulations. The list of elected officials was handed over to President Cyril Ramaphosa during the ceremony.
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is slated to receive the lists of designated Members of Parliament from the IEC on Thursday, in preparation for the inaugural session of the National Assembly, over which he will preside.
