The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has launched a new self-service WhatsApp channel for taxpayers to easily interact with SARS about any tax-related queries.

The SARS WhatsApp channel allows taxpayers to request their:

  • Tax Reference Number
  • Statement of Account
  • Return Refund Status
  • Audit Status
  • Notice of Assessment

To access this service, taxpayers should have WhatsApp on their mobile or desktop and must save the SARS WhatsApp number, 0800 11 7277, in their contact list.

To start the interaction, taxpayers should text a greeting like โ€œHiโ€ or โ€œHello.โ€ SARS will then respond with a description of the service offerings and a service request menu, making it easy to navigate and find the required assistance.

However, SARS says that to authenticate successfully, taxpayers will need to WhatsApp from their mobile device number registered on the SARS systems.
