UPDATE (14:14): Capitec has announced that all the services that were affected by the outage are now back up and running.
Capitec Bank customers were surprised as they woke up on Friday morning to find themselves unable to access online banking services and ATMs due to a major tech issue. The bank sent out a text message to notify customers: “We are experiencing nationwide service issues including Card. We’re working hard to resolve this. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
The outage has been linked to global crashes affecting Microsoft’s Windows operating system, which also impacted the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. This widespread IT disruption affected several sectors globally, including airports, media, banks, and telecommunications companies. In South Africa, notable entities like broadcaster eNCA and Capitec Bank were among those hit.
Due to an unexpected issue with an international service provider, we are currently experiencing nationwide service disruptions.

Microsoft acknowledged the problem and stated, “We’re investigating an issue impacting users’ ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services.”
