Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has been given the green light to prepare its venue for a potential opportunity to host the 2027 F1 Grand Prix.
In September, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr. Gayton McKenzie, met with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, noting that South Africa is ‘one step closer to bringing it [Formula 1] to South Africa.
McKenzie also mentioned that he had an ‘extremely good meeting with President Mohammed Ben Sulayem of FIA‘ to discuss support for the F1 bid.
South Africa once hosted electrifying Formula 1 events at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit between 1961 and 1993. However, since then, South African enthusiasts have only experienced the thrill of F1 through their screens.
Ahead of the preparations to host a modern Formula 1 event, the iconic Kyalami has engaged Apex Circuit Design to create a roadmap for FIA Grade 1 accreditation—a key requirement for the event.
Apex is a renowned motorsport engineering firm known for designing some of the world’s best racetracks.
As per Car Mag report, these upgrades are expected to cost around $10 million (R177 million).
