Our movie pick of the week is ‘Umjolo: The Gone Girl‘, the first installment in Netflix’s new four-part anthology, Umjolo, which dives into the raw truths of umjolo (relationships and dating).
Mam Sbosh (Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi) leads the story as the narrator for this local rom-com, unfolding the chapter of women who face betrayal and heartbreak from unfaithful partners. In ‘Umjolo: The Gone Girl‘, we meet Lethu (played by Sibongiseni Shezi), a well groomed and cultured hopeless romantic, convinced she’s found her perfect match in her fiancé, Lucky (played by Tyson Mathonsi). But Lethu’s fairytale engagement takes a dark turn when a doctor’s visit reveals she has got infected with Chlamydia from her perfect partner.
Lucky is a hardcore player who’s all about playing dirty when it comes to women. And that’s exactly what Lethu discovers when she confronts her cheating partner, who has been with more than 17 other girls.
As her world crumbles, Lethu leans on her friends Amanda, Zanele, and Thoko to deal with the betrayal. Meanwhile, Lucky, influenced by his philandering brother, pleads for forgiveness, but his repeated lies and betrayals only push Lethu further into despair.
Umjolo: The Gone Girl explores the complexities of love, loyalty, and the emotional chains that often bind people to toxic relationships.
Directed by Fikile “Mr Fix” Mogodi, Mthunzi Dubazana, Zuko Nodada, and Raphael Chillis Mhlongo, with a powerful cast including Baby Cele, Meshack Mavuso, Gugu Gumede, Nirvana Nokwe and Ntando Mncube, the movie brings humor, depth, and authenticity to common but rarely discussed relationship struggles.
Umjolo doesn’t shy away from portraying the highs and lows of mjolo (dating) in today’s world, making it a relatable watch for anyone who has experienced love or heartbreak. Look out for Part 2, set to release next month.
