Netflix brings us a bubbly comedy with ‘The Mabaso’s Family Reunion,’ from Mandla N and produced by Black Brain Pictures.
The story kicks off with tragedy in the Mabaso family as siblings Zoe (Natasha Thahane), Thuli (Lerato Mvelase), Bongz (Bonko Khoza), and Bheki (Thulani Mtsweni) return to their hometown to bury their beloved mother.
But each of them comes with their own baggage. Zoe, once a rising actress and influencer, is grappling with the fallout of a leaked sex tape that’s cost her career. Thuli, on the other hand, is dealing with the consequences of her affair with a married doctor, leaving her pregnant and jobless.
Then there’s Bheki, a tenderpreneur who squandered money meant for government projects and now finds himself broke, unable to maintain the soft life his family once enjoyed.
As the siblings struggle to put together a decent funeral, things take a different turn when they discover a hidden stash of R5 million in the coffin, which turns out not to be their mother’s. Chaos ensues as they realize this money belongs to someone dangerous who wants it back. They also have to deal with a scheming pastor (Jerry Mofokeng) who’ll do anything to get paid.
The situation spirals into family fights, shady dealings, and survival schemes as the Mabaso clan navigates drama and their own dysfunctions.
With a blend of drama and and laugh-out-loud moments, The Mabaso’s Family Reunion is a solid and bubbly comedy watch especially if you enjoy local content.
The series also stars Alfred Ntombela, Sibulele Ntlebi, and Nat Ramabulana.
