Local motorists will be able to use tap-and-go payment at toll gates across South Africa, from 01 December 2024.
This system eliminates the need for traditional magnetic stripe cards, streamlining transactions for drivers on some of the country’s busiest routes.
The initiative follows a successful pilot program introduced in late 2023 by FNB, Visa, and the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC). The trial covered more than 88 lanes along the N3 toll route connecting Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, including major toll points such as De Hoek, Wilge, Tugela, and Mooi River plazas. The system’s success has led to its wider implementation ahead of the festive season rush, ensuring faster, more secure transactions for holiday travelers.
This rollout doesn’t stop with the N3. It also extends to the TRAC N4 route between Pretoria and Mozambique, including Diamond Hill, Middelburg, Machado, and Nkomazi toll plazas, as well as the iconic Chapman’s Peak tollway in the Western Cape. In total, an additional 73 lanes have been equipped with tap-to-pay terminals, further enhancing convenience for drivers across the country. Additionally, foreign cards will now be accepted, simplifying payments for international visitors.
The contactless payment system supports various payment methods, allowing drivers to pay quickly and securely by tapping their Visa or Mastercard-enabled bank cards or mobile payment devices. This eliminates the delays caused by swiping or inserting cards, making toll payments more efficient.
