The rollout is part of a broader partnership between Uber and Chinese-owned electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, announced in July 2023.
Globally, Uber and BYD are working together to introduce 100,000 new BYD EVs to key markets, including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
BYD, which has been active in South Africa for over a year, is also making strides in the public transport sector, with plans to deliver 120 electric buses to Cape Town’s Golden Arrow Bus Services by the end of 2025.
BYD, a formidable competitor to other electric vehicle giants like Tesla, offers advanced EV technology, and its strategic partnership with Uber is designed to provide drivers access to affordable pricing and financing options for BYD vehicles on the platform.
This pilot program in Johannesburg aligns with Uber’s global push for sustainable transportation and its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. If successful, the initiative will pave the way for broader adoption of EVs in South Africa’s ride-sharing industry.
