Uber has launched its Courier Bakkie service in South Africa, offering users the convenience of transporting large, heavy items with ease. This service allows customers to request a bakkie directly via the Uber app, enabling the movement of items weighing up to one tonne.
South Africa is the first market globally to receive this offering, with the initial rollout taking place in Johannesburg. Plans are already underway to expand the service to Cape Town and Durban in the near future.
This development replaces the former “Uber Package” service, now rebranded as “Courier”, to better reflect Uber’s growing range of transportation solutions.
The service is expected to benefit both individual users and small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For personal users, it simplifies the process of transporting large items such as furniture, appliances, and catering supplies. For SMEs, it offers a cost-effective solution for logistics and delivery needs, allowing businesses to move heavy items like building materials, car parts, and large orders.
By streamlining access to larger delivery vehicles, Uber aims to empower users to manage their transport needs more efficiently.
The Courier Bakkie service is currently available in Johannesburg, with Cape Town and Durban set to follow.
