Top Stories in AFRICA this week: Ramaphosa vs. Kagame, AFCON 2025, DRC Conflict, Donald Trump & more

Happening in AFRICA this week.

Here are the top stories from Africa: Tensions escalate in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as four more South African soldiers are killed, bringing the death toll to 13, while M23 rebels continue their advance, capturing Goma. In a related development, Rwanda’s President Kagame has clashed with South African President Ramaphosa, accusing him of spreading misinformation, while Ramaphosa warns Rwanda of serious consequences should hostilities continue.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed the group draws for the much-anticipated AFCON 2025, alongside the unveiling of a new logo inspired by Moroccan art. The opening match of AFCON 2025 will see Morocco face off against Comoros.

On a different front, a new report reveals a disturbing directive from former President Trump to halt the supply of essential HIV and malaria drugs to poorer nations, while Goma, in the DRC, faces severe strain with bodies piling up in the streets and overwhelmed hospitals.

Check out all the top stories below:

FOUR MORE SA SOLDIERS KILLED IN DRC, BRINGING TOLL TO 13 AS M23 TAKES GOMA

Four more South African soldiers have lost their lives in clashes with the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group in eastern DR Congo, the defence force confirmed on Tuesday.

This follows last week’s attack, which claimed the lives of nine soldiers.

A statement from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) revealed that three soldiers lost their lives in fighting near Goma airport on Monday, while a fourth died from wounds suffered in a previous battle.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) expressed sorrow over the latest losses suffered in the conflict, revealing details of the attack:

“The M23 rebels launched several a mortar bomb in the direction of Goma Airport, which landed in the SANDF base, and this resulted in the SANDF losing three members.”

“Furthermore, the SANDF is also saddened to announce that one of our members who was injured during the battle with M23 rebels over the past three days later succumbed to injuries.”

The three recent deaths follow the tragic loss of nine SANDF members last week. Meanwhile, the injured are receiving medical care at the Level 3 Hospital in Goma.

Ramaphosa breaks silence…

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the situation, assuring that defense leadership is working to keep forces “well equipped and sufficiently supported.”

On Wednesday, he extended his condolences to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of the 13 fallen SA National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers, calling them “heroic and gallant” fighters for peace.

“We honour and mourn them,” he said, adding that families of both the deceased and the injured are receiving full support, and efforts to repatriate the remains are in progress.

The President stated that the ongoing conflict stems from an escalation by the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia, who are clashing with the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and targeting peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).

MOTSHEKGA REJECTS ALLEGATIONS OF UNDER-RESOURCED SANDF SOLDIERS IN DRC

South African Defence Minister Angie Motshekga has denied claims that SANDF troops stationed in the DRC lack proper equipment.

This comes after 13 soldiers were killed in Goma amid clashes between the DRC army and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels.

Speaking at the Cabinet Lekgotla in Pretoria, Motshekga, who traveled to the DRC from January 22 to 25, stated that she was never made aware of any issues regarding ammunition or resource shortages.

“I personally went to Goma, and I got a briefing from all the generals. At no stage did they say they had no ammunition,” she said.

She added “We reinforced them, on the basis that because there’s been this escalated hostilities and the fluid situation. It was important to make sure that they would not reach a point where they ran out of ammunition.”

Motshekga dismissed concerns about supply shortages, stating firmly, “At no stage did any of the generals, even the force leader, say to me they had run out of food.”

Motshekga further emphasized the defensive role of the South African troops in the region, explaining, “We are not armed to go and fight, we are armed to go and keep peace, and now that we are caught in the crossfire, it’s going to be important for us to reinforce, that’s why we reinforce,” she said.

The minister further disclosed that President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a stern warning to Rwanda, stating that any further aggression against SANDF troops would be considered a declaration of war. Rwanda is accused of supporting the M23 rebels.

KAGAME VS RAMAPHOSA: RAMAPHOSA SENDS WARNING TO RWANDA + KAGAME THREATENS SA

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed for a ceasefire and the renewal of peace discussions to address the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Ramaphosa engaged in a telephone discussion with President Kagame of Rwanda regarding the ongoing crisis in Eastern DRC and the deadly clash that claimed the lives of SAMIDRC peacekeepers.

The call for dialogue comes after the tragic loss of nine South African peacekeepers in clashes with Rwandan-backed militant group M23 near Goma, alongside the worsening violence in the mineral-rich region.

However…..

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has strongly criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa over the handling of the DRC conflict and their recent discussions on the matter.

Kagame took to Twitter (now X) to address the issue, revealing the discrepancies between their private conversations and what has been presented in the media. He expressed frustration over what he sees as distortions and misrepresentations, calling attention to the gravity of the situation. Kagame emphasized that the media reports and statements from South African officials do not reflect the true nature of their exchanges.

Kagame began by addressing the content of their conversations, stating:
“I held two conversations this week with President Ramaphosa on the situation in Eastern DRC, including earlier today. What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies. If words can change so much from a conversation to a public statement, it says a lot about how these very important issues are being managed.”

Additionally, Kagame responded to claims made by Ramaphosa about a “warning” being issued, stating that no such statement was made by the South African president. He clarified the content of their discussion, including logistical support for South African troops, and reinforced his position on the matter:
“President Ramaphosa has never given a ‘warning’ of any kind, unless it was delivered in his local language which I do not understand. He did ask for support to ensure the South African force has adequate electricity, food and water, which we shall help communicate.”

On the issue of the deaths of the 13 South African soldiers, Kagame addressed the blame placed on the M23 rebels, contradicting Ramaphosa’s earlier remarks. Kagame confirmed that it was the DRC’s own military forces that were responsible:
“President Ramaphosa confirmed to me that M23 did not kill the soldiers from South Africa, FARDC did.”

Finally, Kagame weighed in on South Africa’s role in the ongoing conflict, making it clear that while Rwanda would welcome South Africa’s contribution to peace efforts, it was not in a position to act as a mediator. He further issued a warning regarding any potential escalation:
“If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator. And if South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.”

Kagame’s statement marks a significant shift in rhetoric, heightening tensions between Rwanda and South Africa as the conflict in the DRC continues to evolve.

TRUMP ORDER TO STOP HIV, MALARIA DRUG SUPPLY TO POOR NATIONS

A memo obtained by Reuters reveals that the Trump administration has taken steps to halt the delivery of essential medications for HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and medical supplies for newborns in countries receiving aid from USAID worldwide.

The directive is part of a larger freeze on foreign aid that began last week, which also impacts the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, a global health initiative launched by George W. Bush that has saved over 25 million lives worldwide.

Reuters reports that the Trump administration ordered USAID contractors to halt work on Tuesday, impacting global supplies of lifesaving drugs for HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis.

“This is catastrophic,” said Atul Gawande, former head of global health at USAID who left the agency this month. “Donated drug supplies keeping 20-million people living with HIV alive. That stops today.”

Chemonics and USAID did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Gawande said additional partners received notices preventing them from delivering medicines to clinics or opening clinics funded by the U.S., even if the supplies were available. This includes efforts supporting 6.5 million children with HIV across 23 countries.

As part of the 90-day foreign aid suspension Trump ordered on January 20, the administration has also placed around 60 senior USAID officials on leave, sources told Reuters.

M23 REBELS SEIZE GOMA AIRPORT

Rwandan-backed militant group M23 rebels took control of Goma’s airport on Tuesday, raising concerns over aid access for the thousands displaced by the ongoing violence. Their advance into the city on Monday left devastation in its wake, with streets littered with bodies after intense clashes.

The conflict, rooted in the lingering effects of the Rwandan genocide and the struggle for Congo’s mineral riches, has now reached its worst escalation since 2012.

UN REPORTS DEAD BODIES IN STREETS, HOSPITALS STRAINED IN GOMA

On Tuesday, U.N. and aid agencies reported that, after Rwanda-backed rebels seized Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, streets were littered with dead bodies, and hospitals were overwhelmed with patients suffering from gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

The M23 rebels’ entry into Goma on Monday intensified a conflict spanning three decades, with pockets of resistance still emerging from the army and its backers.

The M23 rebels are among roughly 100 armed groups competing for control in North Kivu province, which includes Goma and is rich in minerals vital for global technology.

According to U.N. humanitarian spokesperson Jens Laerke, there were reports on Tuesday of widespread violence, including gender-based abuse and rape, looting of property such as a humanitarian warehouse, and attacks on health and aid facilities in the city.

“The humanitarian situation in and around Goma remains extremely worrying, and this morning (there were) heavy small arms fire and mortar fire across the city and the presence of many dead bodies in the streets,” said Laerke, adding that hospitals are “struggling to manage the influx of wounded people.”

TSHISEKEDI PROMISES TO FIGHT M23 REBELS FOR GOMA

President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Thursday that his military is engaged in combat against the Rwandan-backed militant group M23, which has recently seized significant territory in the east.

Tshisekedi condemned the international community for remaining passive as the rebels took over the DRC town of Goma and advanced further into the country.

In a televised address on Wednesday night, Tshisekedi called out the international community for its lack of response, stating, “Your silence and inaction are an affront to the DRC.”

According to the UN, up to 4,000 Rwandan troops are assisting M23 militants, who seized strategic locations in Goma on Wednesday.

CAF UNVEILS NEW AFCON 2025 LOGO INSPIRED BY MOROCCAN ART

TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations has revealed its official Morocco 2025 logo, a striking emblem that celebrates African football’s spirit and history.

CAF describes it as a modern, iconic representation of the continent’s unity, adding to the excitement as the tournament approaches.

The TotalEnergies CAF AFCON finals will take place in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026, adding another chapter to Africa’s most prestigious football tournament.

The tournament’s logo blends sport and art, symbolizing pride, resilience, and hope.

The logo draws on the timeless Moroccan “zellij” mosaic, turning football into a work of art where skill, passion, and creativity unite.

The striking colors—gold for victory, green for solidarity, red for perseverance, and blue for endless opportunity—carry more meaning than just beauty. They represent the heartbeat of African football, echoing the dynamism of the game, the strength of its athletes, and the enthusiasm of its supporters.

AFCON 2025 OPENING MATCH: MOROCCO VS COMOROS

The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will open with Morocco facing Comoros on Sunday, 21 December 2025.

Morocco’s Atlas Lions, heading into their 20th AFCON appearance, are aiming to break a 49-year title drought since their last win in 1976.

Though considered favorites, their best performance since then was a semi-final exit in 2004 at the hands of Tunisia.

Comoros’ second group match in the 2021 edition ended in a 2-0 loss to Morocco, a defeat they will carry with them as they seek redemption in front of a passionate Moroccan crowd.
