In a move that signals its ambition beyond data and airtime, MTN has revealed plans to launch a Netflix-like video streaming platform designed specifically for African audiences.
Unlike global streaming giants, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all rollout. MTN’s platform will take a mobile-first approach, acknowledging the realities of how most Africans access the internet. It’ll also feature flexible subscription options that cater to varying income levels across different regions. The goal? To make streaming feel less like a luxury and more like an everyday experience.
The company is teaming up with UK-based cloud video software provider Synamedia to bring the service to life. Known for its work with Vodafone, Sky, and other global players, Synamedia brings the backend muscle, while MTN brings local insight and reach.
The timeline is still under wraps.
MTN said the upcoming streaming platform will be built with accessibility and local relevance at its core… “The service will leverage Synamedia’s advanced, cloud-based technologies to deliver both linear television and video-on-demand content. The platform will offer diverse monetisation models, including subscriptions, ad-supported content, and free streaming channels with targeted advertising. Each market will benefit from a curated content strategy, thoughtfully adapted to local cultures, languages, and viewing habits – ensuring deep relevance and strong audience resonance across the continent.”
MTN hasn’t named a launch country yet, but a multi-market rollout across key regions like Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa seems likely.
