The Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town transformed into something straight out of a dystopian dream as PUMA brought its cult-classic Mostro sneaker to life in a way only PUMA can. Dubbed the MOSTRO Lab, the event (Wednesday, 7 May 2025) was part sneaker celebration, part art installation, and all-out sensory takeover.
Let’s rewind for a second. Named after the Italian word for monster, the Mostro made its first statement back in 1999—long before "weird" was cool. With its alien-like silhouette and Y2K energy, it gained cult status among style rebels. Fast-forward to now, and Mostro is back in the spotlight, having stolen the show at New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. Its fanbase? Growing by the minute, fueled by special-edition drops and collabs that are flying off shelves.

THE MOSTRO LAB
To celebrate this monster's modern-day takeover, PUMA invited guests to step inside the Mostroverse—a surreal, living, breathing space that felt like being swallowed whole by a futuristic creature. Guests navigated a hauntingly beautiful setup where tech met art, minimalism clashed with chaos, and Markus Wormstorm, Ivan Turanjanin, and Athi Maq delivered the perfect eerie soundtrack to set the mood.
At the heart of it all? The Room of Refraction, a next-level installation by Cape Town artist Inka Kendzia. Featuring reactive lights, laser projections, and ambient audio, this was the beating heart of the Lab. Cameras hidden inside shrink-wrapped sneakers hanging from the ceiling fed distorted guest reflections back onto giant screens—pulling everyone deeper into the Mostro’s mind. You weren’t just there to observe… you became part of the creature.
Over in the Room of Reflection, things got even wilder. Guests lined up for futuristic tooth gems, courtesy of a pop-up dental lab straight out of a sci-fi flick—think dentist chairs, lab coats, masks, and all. And if that wasn’t enough, Palm Black Tattoo Studio was on hand for flash tattoos, while another corner let guests trick out their kicks with gems, studs, and laces.
Of course, PUMA wasn’t about to miss the photo-op moment. The Castle’s fountain was turned into a smoky, mirror-lined backdrop complete with Mostro tentacles holding up the logo—a scene begging for Instagram’s attention.

STUDIO H SERVED UP
Food? Not your average canapé situation. STUDIO H served up black sourdough crackers with neon pink hummus, charcoal bao buns with sticky soy lion’s mane mushrooms, and black-and-silver sesame shortbread. Drinks? Delivered in IV-style serum bags, of course. Because why not serve your cocktail like a sci-fi health boost?
The event didn’t just look cool—it was a history lesson in motion. From the Mostro Alto Boot from 2005 to the latest drops like the Mostro OG, Mostro Ecstasy, Mostro Camo, Mostro Fey, and more, PUMA honored every step of this silhouette’s journey. And if you missed the invite? PUMA had already been warming things up with a Seeding Lounge at Milck Studio in Woodstock, giving select guests early access to the latest Mostro lineup.
