After 147 years of human judgment, the iconic tennis tournamentโWimbledonโis replacing line judges with AI starting this year, following a successful trial run in 2024.
The judges at Wimbledon will be replaced by 12 high-tech cameras placed courtside to track the ball and make in-or-out calls.
The switch is meant to boost accuracy and cut down on human error, following the growing use of technology in pro sports to improve officiating.
The Grand Slam tennis championship, kicking off (30 June 2025 โ 13 Jul 2025), will fully adopt electronic line calling powered by Hawk-Eye Innovationsโa Sony-owned company that uses AI to track ball trajectories and assist officiating across 25 sports, from baseball to soccer.
The technology has already proven its value at top-tier tournamentsโfirst rolled out across all courts at the Australian Open in 2021, and later adopted by the US Open during the COVID-19 pandemicโshowing how AI-driven officiating is steadily becoming the new standard in tennis.
