U.S media giant Paramount Global, the parent company of MTV, will be shutting down all remaining MTV-branded music networks by the end of 2025, Newsweek reports.
The shutdown will affect MTV Live, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, and Club MTV.
Reports indicate that MTV will begin its shutdown in the UK and Ireland on December 31, 2025, with the closure spreading to countries such as Poland, Hungary, Germany, and Austria.
Before TikTok and streaming services took over, music videos ruled pop culture. They first showed up in the 1960s, offering artists a new way to connect with fans, and by the 1980s, they had become a global obsession.
That explosion in popularity was thanks to one major player: MTV. Launched in 1981, it made history as the world’s first 24-hour music television channel, instantly becoming the heartbeat of youth culture.
MTV didn’t just play music; it created moments, and it even gave birth to the legendary MTV Video Music Awards.
But well, times have changed! While music videos are still around, their cultural weight has slowly faded. They no longer dominate screens or shape trends the way they once did.
However, the main channel, MTV HD, will stay on air. MTV HD will continue airing fan-favourite reality shows, including Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore.
